Falmouth Harbour, Antigua:
April 28, 2010
Read ’em and whoop
After five days anchored in the turquoise water behind the reef off Green Island, we returned to civilization – Falmouth Harbour – to do some provisioning, visit a couple of chandleries, deal with laundry, etc. Sharing the cost of a rental car with our friends Chris and Yani on Magus (who had a similar to-do list) seemed the most efficient (and least expensive) way to get the chores done. Plus we could stop for lunch and whatever else struck our fancy along the way.
I’m a sucker for signs that are unintentionally hilarious (at least to someone with my sort of sense of humor), and as we drove around a good chunk of Antigua today, I spotted three worthy additions to my collection. In front of a small, ordinary grocery shop just north of Falmouth Harbour – the type you see everywhere along roadsides in the Caribbean – was the following sign: “Risk Takers Superette.” If I shopped here, would I be risking salmonella from the chicken? Ciguatera poisoning from the frozen fish?
A sign a few miles farther up the road also seemed to imply a strong element of risk: “Good Luck Chinese Restaurant.” Expecting greaseless spring rolls? Good luck…
We lunched elsewhere. Afterwards, driving through Antigua’s largest town, St. John’s, we spotted this beauty of missing punctuation in front of a building in a sorry state of repair: “Government House Complex Renovation.” It sure looked like a complex renovation was required – but we suspect that’s not what the sign-posters meant.
Another sign, near the market in St. John’s, wasn’t funny in and of itself, but it sure did get my foodie brain going. “Gravy will be back,” it proclaimed. I immediately assumed that one of the women at the nearby takeaway stands might be reinventing her stew pork, or her chicken.
Not quite. A closer look revealed the sign was posted on a taxi stand. And yes, Gravy, one of the drivers, would apparently return soon.
