Greener still:
The case of the jealous wife, part II
Bad enough that I had to suffer Steve’s report on his night out with Harvey in Port of Spain that included seeing both calypso singer Denyse Plummer and steelpan master Ken “Professor” Philmore perform live. (See my July 5th post.) But then this missive comes a couple days later:
“Harvey left midday Sunday, so I didn’t go to the Savannah for the Best Village Food and Folk Fair, which, among other things, involves an acre of tents and stands cooking up roti, curry duck, stew pork, wild fowl, bake and shark, oildown, cassava pone, crab and dumplings…” What a sacrifice for my Steve. It was also raining, he admitted, but a little water wouldn’t normally keep him away from all those sweet hands.
“But the rain stopped around five-ish, so I decided to get off the boat and go to The Anchorage [a big nightspot with live entertainment that’s walking distance down the road from Crews Inn, where Receta was moored until she was hauled out] for the launch of Peter Samuel’s Carnival 2011 mas band. The band’s theme is ‘Skullduggery,’ and there were jumbies all over, and women in skeleton costumes on swings above the crowd. I think I was the only non-Trini there. First was the parade unveiling the 22 themed costume designs – pretty cool – but the real highlight was afterwards: a powerful, 1-1/2 hour, no-pause set by David Rudder, accompanied by Charlie’s Roots. I REALLY wished you were here – the crowd (all ages) went nuts as he opened with ‘Permission to Mash Up the Place,’ followed by ‘Oil and Music,’ and then more classics like ‘The Hammer,’ ‘Trini to de Bone,’ ‘High Mas’…..” Enough already. Steve knows the legendary King David is my favorite calypso/soca artist. But I’m getting even: Steve is still in Trinidad, and I’ve just learned David Rudder is performing within walking distance of our Toronto home tomorrow, as part of the CBC’s “Soccer Nation Street Party.” Will I be there? You can bet your sweet buss-up I will…. Back to top
